If you are experiencing a life-threatening emergency, please call 911 immediately.

A knocked out tooth is by far the most common dental emergency that occurs. Normally, a knocked out tooth comes from participating in physical contact activities without a mouth guard protection, but this can also happen by hitting your mouth on something hard or biting something that is too hard. The best thing you can do for a knocked out tooth is locate the tooth and place it back in the tooth socket. It is possible that the normal tooth can be restored, but it will just depend on how quickly you can be in our office. Call us as soon as you can and we will have you in our office to help you.
A broken or chipped tooth is the second most common emergency, and it is also the most painful. The pulp of your tooth, or the interior center of your tooth, is filled with different nerves and blood vessels. If you break or damage those, it can cause serious pain. Again, try to locate the part of the tooth that came off and come into our office. Natural restoration is possible, but if for some reason the broken pieces cannot be repaired, there are other dental cosmetic procedures that will restore your smile.
An abscessed tooth is a tooth infection that begins along the gumline and seeps down into the tooth socket, creating pain. This is something that needs to be professionally diagnosed and treated as soon as you believe you have one. Some of the symptoms that you can watch for include inflammation of gums, severe toothache, excessive bleeding, or leaking pus along the gum line. If you experience these symptoms, please come into our office right away. If an abscessed tooth is not taken care of, it can make your teeth fall out and cause nerve damage.
Other dental emergencies include biting your tongue, tearing sensitive tissue in your mouth, and excessive bleeding, especially after a dental surgery or procedure. In any case, do what you can to ease the pain. We recommend a cold compress to help eliminate the swelling and any over-the-counter pain medication that works for you.
